Drain and flush the DEF tank, refill with fresh API-certified DEF, and inspect the quality sensor and tank heater after freeze events. Never add water, coolant, or diesel to the DEF tank. Typical contributors include dEF diluted with water or contaminated with other fluids, expired or thermally degraded DEF left in a hot tank, and failed DEF quality/concentration sensor. A calm sequence is to test sampled DEF with a refractometer for 32.5% concentration, then drain, flush, and refill the tank with fresh certified DEF, and only afterward budget for aPI-certified diesel exhaust fluid if the data still points there.
