Treat P0088 as a fault that can affect safe operation—do not write it off as a nuisance lamp. P0088 means fuel-rail pressure is above the commanded range. On common-rail diesels (and some GDI engines) excess pressure stresses injector nozzles and rail seals; the ECM may cut torque to protect hardware. Contrast this with P0087 low pressure: here look for a stuck metering valve, failed pressure-relief path, biased rail sensor reading high, or a control solenoid that will not reduce pump output. Confirm with commanded-versus-actual graphs and a mechanical gauge when possible. Prioritize ruling out fuel metering valve stuck in a high-delivery position, rail pressure-relief valve stuck closed, and rail pressure sensor biased high before you resume normal driving. Start by graph commanded vs actual rail pressure during a controlled load, then compare sensor reading to a mechanical gauge before parts replacement. Only plan for rail pressure sensor if gauge correlation fails after measurements still condemn that part.
