Means the powertrain lost or mistrusted the vehicle speed signal, which it needs for shift scheduling, torque converter lockup, cruise control, and speedometer drive. On older vehicles the source is a physical sensor on the transmission tailshaft; on newer platforms the number arrives over the network from the ABS module, and the failure is then a bus or module issue rather than a sensor. Establish which architecture you have before testing anything, because the two paths share nothing: if the scan tool shows healthy individual wheel speeds but zero vehicle speed, the sensor is fine and the message path is broken. Otherwise scope the sensor output while the drive wheels rotate and inspect the connector and reluctor for gear-oil contamination or debris. Expect harsh shifts and inoperative cruise until the signal is restored.
