Is a real thermal event rather than a sensor plausibility complaint: the ECM recorded coolant temperature above the overheat threshold and usually took protective action such as retarding timing, cutting cylinders, or derating power. Stop driving before you diagnose, because a few extra kilometres past this point is what warps heads and cooks gaskets. Once cool, verify coolant level and look for trapped air from an incomplete bleed, confirm that the fan clutch or electric fan actually engages at temperature, and sweep the radiator face with an infrared thermometer for cold patches that reveal internal plugging. A collapsing lower hose, an eroded water pump impeller, a thermostat stuck closed, or combustion gases pushed into the coolant all produce this code. Pressure-test the system and run a combustion-gas test before refilling and declaring it fixed.
