— P0171 rarely leaves you stranded, but sustained lean misfire overheats the Bank 1 catalyst and can stack P0420. Diagnose within a few drive cycles—especially before an emissions inspection.

"Lean" here means the air–fuel ratio—not oil pressure, not general airflow, and not low power by itself. Gasoline engines target about 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel (14.7:1). P0171 means Bank 1 fuel control has run out of authority trying to enrich the mixture—long-term fuel trim (LTFT) and often short-term fuel trim (STFT) are pinned positive past the OEM lean threshold. The ECM sees too much oxygen (or not enough fuel) on Bank 1 Sensor 1 and keeps adding injector pulse until the adaptive limit trips. Drivers usually get a check-engine light with a lean tip-in stumble, high idle surge, or a whistle from a vacuum leak; some only notice the light after cold starts when unmetered air is worst. Freeze frame load, rpm, and coolant temperature tell you whether this is an idle-only leak or a loaded fuel-delivery problem.
Think in shop probability, not sticker price. Most often on NA gasoline trucks and cars: unmetered air after the mass airflow sensor (MAF)—cracked PCV hose, intake gasket weep, brake-booster hose, or a loose oil-fill/dipstick path. Contaminated or skewed MAF (grams/sec too low for the rpm/load) is the next everyday killer: the ECM under-fuels while the upstream O2 still screams lean. Low fuel pressure from a weak pump, clogged filter, or leaking regulator sits in the common bucket. A lazy or biased Bank 1 Sensor 1 oxygen sensor (O2) can invent a lean story, but condemn it only after trims, MAF, and smoke work check out. Exhaust leaks ahead of the upstream O2 also pull false air and fake a lean bank.
Diagnosis lives in the trim graph. Key-on verify freeze frame, then watch STFT/LTFT at hot idle and at a steady 2500 rpm. Huge positive trim at idle that collapses with rpm points hard at a vacuum leak; trim that stays high under load points at fuel pressure or MAF. Compare MAF grams/sec to a known-good chart or similar vehicle at the same rpm. Smoke-test the intake with the MAF installed and the throttle closed—look for smoke at gaskets, PCV, and the brake booster. Gauge fuel pressure and volume against OEM; do not trust a resting pressure alone. Force the upstream O2 rich with propane or a restricted exhaust path briefly—if STFT does not swing negative, the sensor or wiring is lying. Related rich codes (P0172) after a wild MAF cleaning, or catalyst efficiency (P0420) after months of lean misfire, are follow-on damage, not the root.
Replace the MAF, repair the leak path, or restore fuel pressure when the data names that circuit. Dig elsewhere when a new MAF still shows impossible airflow, when smoke finds nothing but rail pressure collapses under load, or when only Bank 1 Sensor 1 voltage is stuck lean while Bank 2 is healthy on a V-engine. System context: this is closed-loop fuel metering on Bank 1—not EVAP, not thermostat logic. Chronic lean misfire feeds the catalyst the wrong chemistry and often precedes P0420; fix trims before you authorize a converter.
