Is the J1939 engine coolant temperature parameter, and on a heavy truck it drives fan command, derate strategy, aftertreatment regeneration permission, and the dash gauge. Because so much depends on it, decide immediately whether the number is false or the engine is genuinely hot. Cross-check the broadcast value against an infrared reading at the thermostat housing and against oil temperature, and look at coolant level: SPN 110 together with a low-level warning usually means a leak rather than a sensor. For a circuit fault, back-probe the sensor for reference and ground, then compare thermistor resistance to specification at a known temperature. Air trapped after a cooling-system service, a thermostat stuck closed, and a fan clutch or shutter fault all drive a genuine high reading. Derate under load is normal once the threshold is crossed.
