Is the J1939 engine coolant level parameter on Class 7–8 diesels. When it sets, the ECM or instrument cluster is telling you either the surge tank is genuinely low or the coolant level sensor circuit is lying. Treat that as an overheat risk first, not a casual lamp. On many platforms a confirmed low-level or open-circuit reading can trigger engine protection torque derate (SPN 1569 territory), progressive warnings, or a hard shutdown strategy aimed at saving the head gasket, turbo, and aftertreatment pack. The scanner text often names the sensor; your job is to prove whether the tank is empty or the probe is the liar.

Separate FMI families before you wrench. FMI 1-style data-below-normal / low-level reports push you toward a real loss of coolant—hose, radiator, water pump weep, EGR cooler, or head-gasket path. FMI 3-style voltage-high / open-circuit reports push you toward the sensor, harness, or connector. Cross-check SPN 110 (coolant temperature) in the same freeze: rising temp with a “full” tank PID is a classic bad-sensor or stuck-float pattern; falling level with normal temp early in the trip is usually a leak still catching up. Never top off hot under pressure—cool the engine, then verify cold level at the OEM mark on the surge tank.

Contaminated or oily coolant can bridge two-probe sensors and invent a “full” reading while the block is low—look at fluid condition when you open the tank.

Diagnosis sequence: cold visual level and dye or pressure test to ~OEM bar/psi; capture SPN 111 FMI plus related SPN 110; ohm and voltage-test the sensor against the OEM chart; wiggle the harness at the tank and firewall while watching the PID; repair opens/shorts before condemning the probe; refill with the correct mix and bleed air only after the leak is sealed. On two-wire probe sensors, confirm both tips are wet and free of film; on float-style units, confirm the float moves freely and matches the OEM tank. Replace the surge-tank level sensor when level is proven correct, pressure holds, and the circuit still fails OEM checks. Dig elsewhere when a brand-new sensor returns the same FMI with a dry tank, when SPN 110 is climbing hard, or when white smoke / oil-in-coolant points past the sensor. System context: this is cooling-system integrity feeding engine protection—not an aftertreatment chemistry fault. Unresolved 111 is how fleets walk into overheat damage and protection derate.
