This sheet is the diagnostic home for J1939 ABS wheel-speed sensor faults on Class 7–8 tractors and many trailers. SAE maps the corners as SPN 789 (axle 1 left / steer left), 790 (axle 1 right / steer right), 791 (axle 2 left / drive left), and 792–794 for the remaining axle corners. The fault text on your scan tool names one SPN, but the failure modes—open or shorted sensor, wrong air gap after hub work, cracked or debris-packed tone ring, and harness chafe at the spring hanger—are shared. When any corner loses a clean tone-ring pulse, the ABS/EBS controller typically lights the amber ABS lamp, may disable ABS and ATC on that axle, and still leaves foundation service brakes available. That is why drivers feel normal pedal pressure yet lose anti-lock and traction help on wet grades.
Read the FMI with the SPN before you wrench. Circuit FMIs (open, short to ground/power) push you toward harness and coil resistance. Data-erratic or signal-incorrect FMIs push you toward air gap, tone-ring damage, and intermittent flex. Typical sensor resistance on many WABCO/Bendix-style inductive sensors is roughly 900–2500 Ω cold—always confirm against the OEM chart for that ECU. Live wheel-speed PIDs should rise together when you spin each wheel by hand on a lift; a corner stuck at zero while others move is your first proof of which sensor path is dead.
Most common causes, in shop order: (1) sensor coil open or weak after impact or corrosion, (2) air gap opened by a hub/bearing job that was not reset, (3) tone ring cracked, missing teeth, or packed with metallic debris, (4) harness chafe or connector fretting at the axle or spring hanger, (5) ABS ECU input failure—rare, and last after the path proves clean. Do not condemn the ECU because a new sensor still sets the same SPN: that pattern almost always means the tone ring or harness was the real fault.
Step-by-step: identify the SPN corner from the table above; graph all wheel-speed PIDs during a short road test or hand spin; key-off ohm-test sensor and harness to the ECU pins; inspect and clean the tone ring; set air gap to OEM (often on the order of 0.04 in / ~1 mm max on many platforms—verify the bulletin for your brand); wiggle-test the harness while watching the PID; only then replace the sensor assembly. Replace the part when resistance is open/shorted or AC output stays dead with a proven clean tone ring and harness. Keep searching when a brand-new sensor still fails, when the fault is intermittent over bumps, or when multiple corners fail together (look at power/ground and ECU connectors).
System context: wheel-speed inputs feed ABS modulation, ATC/ASR traction control, and often stability or trailer ABS logic over J1939. A single corner fault does not usually remove service braking, but it does remove the electronic safety net that fleets depend on in rain and on loaded descents. Cross-check related brake-switch faults such as SPN 1121 only after the wheel-speed path is healthy.
