What does this severity mean?

Is the J1939 engine speed parameter—the crank-derived rpm the ECM broadcasts and uses for fueling, protection, and transmission handshakes. When it faults, scanners show missing or erratic engine speed, the truck may hard-start or die, and related systems (shift inhibits, PTO, ABS comparisons) can complain even when the foundation engine problem is a bad crank sensor path. Drivers feel stalling, no-start, tach dropouts, or sudden derate. Always pair the FMI with the SPN: open/short FMIs steer to sensor and harness; data-erratic FMIs steer to air gap, tone wheel, and intermittent flex.

Shop frequency: failed crankshaft position / engine speed sensor, then tone-wheel damage or debris after damper or cover work, then harness chafe at the bellhousing or oil pan. Next: excessive air gap after sensor replacement, connector oil intrusion, or rare ECM speed-input faults. Do not confuse SPN 190 with transmission output speed (SPN 191)—engine speed is the crank story; output shaft speed is the gearbox story.

Diagnosis: graph engine speed during crank and run; a healthy signal rises smoothly with starter engagement and stays stable at idle. Compare to a secondary rpm source if available (cam, handheld tach). Key-off ohm the sensor and harness to the ECM pins; inspect the tone wheel for missing teeth. Set air gap to OEM. Wiggle the harness at the sensor and along the block while watching for dropouts. Replace the speed sensor when ohms or AC/output checks fail with a clean tone wheel. Dig elsewhere when a new sensor still fails with a damaged ring, when multiple speed SPNs fail together (shared power), or when the truck runs but J1939 speed is missing because of a gateway/ECU broadcast issue. System context: SPN 190 feeds fueling timing, idle governors, and driveline enables—without a clean engine speed, diesel protection logic and shift strategies fall apart. Prove the crank path before authorizing injectors or a TCM.
