With SPN 157, prove the circuit before you condemn the part named in the scanner text. SPN 157 is the J1939 parameter for injector metering rail / common-rail fuel pressure. When it faults, the ECM sees unstable or out-of-range rail pressure that threatens injection control—surge, limp, or shutdown under load are typical on heavy diesels. Distinguish sensor-circuit FMIs from true low/high pressure events by graphing commanded versus actual pressure and inspecting the rail sensor harness. Contaminated fuel and failing transfer pumps often precede hard rail-pressure codes on fleet trucks. Discriminate among failing rail-pressure sensor or fretted connector, low supply pressure from filter restriction or weak transfer pump, and high-pressure pump wear unable to hold commanded rail pressure using voltage drop and connector integrity. Verify by graph commanded vs actual rail pressure during a loaded pull, then test transfer-pump volume and replace restricted filters first; replace rail pressure sensor with correct sealing washer only when the wiring path checks out clean.
