Means the mass-air-flow reading is present but disagrees with what the ECM predicts from throttle angle, engine speed, and manifold pressure, so it is a plausibility fault rather than a dead circuit. Start with arithmetic instead of parts: a healthy naturally aspirated engine at wide-open throttle flows roughly 0.8 to 1.1 grams per second for every cubic inch of displacement, so logging grams per second against RPM tells you quickly whether the sensor reads low. Low readings usually trace to a contaminated hot-wire element, a split intake boot downstream of the sensor, or a restricted filter; high readings often follow oil migration from an over-oiled aftermarket filter. Inspect the entire air path for unmetered air before you clean or replace anything, and confirm exhaust backpressure is normal if flow is low everywhere.
