Reports a fault in the generator control circuit: the ECM commanded a charging output through the field or a LIN control line and did not get the response it expected. Modern charging systems are regulated by the ECM to manage load and fuel economy, so this is usually a control or communication problem rather than worn brushes. Measure battery voltage at idle and at 2000 RPM with headlights and blower on: a steady 13.5 to 14.7 volts suggests the alternator is producing and the feedback path is at fault, while a flat 12.4 volts confirms there is no output at all. Check continuity of the control wire, inspect the fuse feeding the field circuit, and load-test the battery, because a badly sulphated battery can drag the regulator into a fault on its own.
