Is the low-input sibling of the general MAF family: the ECM is seeing a mass-air signal that stays below the expected range for the current rpm, load, and throttle opening. Drivers feel a lazy tip-in, a check-engine light, and often a lean bias that shows up as rising short-term fuel trim. Unlike a pure P0100 “circuit fault” text, P0102 steers you toward something that makes the sensor read too little air—or toward a signal wire that is pulled low toward ground. Freeze frame almost always shows a tip-in or cruise where MAF grams-per-second sit oddly low while throttle angle looks normal.
Shop-ranked causes start with a dirty or oil-coated hot-film element that under-reads, then a restricted air filter or collapsed snorkel that starves the sensor, then an intake leak after the MAF that the controller still tries to meter through a low reading. Next come wiring faults that pull the signal low: chafed insulation to ground, a corroded connector pin, or a failed sensor that simply outputs a near-zero voltage. Rarely the ECM input itself is the liar after the harness and sensor prove clean. Do not confuse “low MAF” with “no air”: a big vacuum leak after the sensor can also create weird correlation even when the element is healthy—prove duct integrity both before and after the MAF.
Diagnosis sequence: capture live MAF g/s at idle and during a snap throttle; compare to a known-good chart or a same-engine reference if you have one. Check filter restriction and snorkel shape before you buy parts. Voltage-test the signal at the connector during tip-in—if voltage never rises, decide whether the sensor is dead or the wire is shorted low. Ohm the signal circuit to ground with the sensor unplugged; near-zero ohms means a shorted harness. Smoke the duct after the MAF for unmetered air that skews fueling while the PID stays low. Replace the MAF when power and ground are solid, the harness is not shorted, the duct is sealed, and the live signal still will not climb. Dig elsewhere when a new sensor still reads low with a crushed filter box, when P0171 rides along with a loud hiss after the MAF, or when MAP and calculated airflow disagree hard with throttle. System context: low MAF input is how lean monitors and catalyst stress get started—restore believable airflow metering before chasing injectors.
