Carries transmission input shaft speed over J1939, and the controller compares it against engine speed and output speed to verify that clutches and the torque converter are doing what they were commanded to do. A bad input-speed signal therefore produces symptoms that feel mechanical — slip codes, aborted shifts, hold-in-gear behaviour — even when the hardware is healthy. Graph engine speed and input speed together on the road: they should track closely with the converter locked, and a value that flatlines or spikes at a repeatable point tells you the problem is electrical. Verify sensor resistance against specification, check the connector for fretting and moisture, and inspect the harness where it crosses the bell housing for heat damage. Do not condemn clutches or a converter until this signal has been proven clean under load.
